The short answer to this question is NO. Much like any crafting profession, Inscription will be using resources that you could have sold in the Auction House for gold. I looked at the AH and saw that Glyphs have somewhat reached their saturation point. There are tons of Glyphs for sale with no takers. Maybe it would be different at your server but this is very much the case I most of the realms in the World of Warcraft.
I asked a guildmate about his Glyph business and he said that he has tons of unsold Glyphs in his mailbox. He misses the day when a Glyph could be sold for 50 gold. Right now Glyphs are in the range of 5 to 25gold each.
This is the current state of Inscription. When Wrath of the Lich King came out, people rushed to get Inscription as a profession. Thus there are a lot of Scribes in the World of Warcraft. That was the unwise choice. Instead of using the herbs, they could have sold it for a higher price than the glyphs.
The wiser choice was to take up Herbalism and profit on the demand of herbs. People might say that they farmed for their own herbs to use for their profession but what about the gold spent on parchments and recipes? And if they sold the herbs on the Auction House, they could have made a lot more gold during the Inscription rush. Glyphs might fetch a good amount of gold but then again it could be more.
But not everything about the Inscription profession is bad. What’s good about it is that it is useful for all classes. Therefore the target market for glyphs is huge, unlike other crafting professions that are limited to specific classes.
Maybe once you’ve maxed out your Inscription skills then you can balance and sell both herbs and glyphs in the Auction House. Just keep an ear out for what’s in demand in your server. Sometimes the Trade Channel is not just about senseless chatter.
If you’re thinking about switching to Inscription then I suggest that you don’t. But if you have an alt that doesn’t have a profession yet then you could try out the profession. But to maximize your gold making potential the best profession to take up would be the gathering ones such as mining, skinning and herbalism.
